November News Posted Mon, 02 Nov 2009 00:04:00 +1000 by Chris

Putting together the monthly statistics report and again we have blown our records out of the water.

With over 41000 hits, 15600 pages, 34670 files and 2.259 GB of software downloaded October 2009 has been a massive month at Chris.dunn.name.

Movers and Shakers...

Windows 7 has obviously taken off with users because I have noticed a massive increase of 125% in IE8 users between August and September with a further 10% increase in October.

Opera has been the other big mover in the browsers with a whopping 519% increase in Opera 9.5 users last month and a 65% increase in Opera (pre-9) users.

And what's big at chris.dunn.name?
Visitors were up by 80% in October on top of a 39% increase in September. Lookup, PrintQueue and MediaCenter visitors are up but while Lookup received a 44% download increase the others both lost 60% of downloads in October. This is just a readjustment after an amazing september where downloads increased by up to 950% with the release of a number of new versions and is still ahead of August downloads.

Both of my hosted sites also received a boost last month with Patrick Gentile's site receiving a 78% increase in traffic.

Lookup 8 Testing Started Posted Mon, 26 Oct 2009 02:44:00 +1000 by Chris

Lookup 8 has just begun user testing.

Installation alone is always a good test with Vista, XP and Windows 7 machines with a variety of versions of office. I found a few installation issues and Access version bugs which were rectified this evening in the latest build 8.00.70. The new installshield is much smoother and an installation option has been provided. The location of all the lookup files has moved to dynamic locations to suit newer versions of Windows. This is designed to accomodate Terminal Services users as well as normal users.

I am not far away from releasing a beta or maybe even the application. More news to come...

Site and Software and Lookup! Posted Wed, 21 Oct 2009 02:04:00 +1000 by Chris

Lookup 8 is barrelling along with additional information now posted on the updated Lookup and Licencing pages. As a leadup to Lookup 8 I have also reduced my licencing to a one simple cost $9.95 unlimited licence which is transferable to Lookup 8.

Lookup 8 is targeted at giving users more power and flexibility in their searches and aiding power users in performing more complex search criteria and it is moving in the right direction.

The mobile site http://m.chris.dunn.name has been updated with one easy main page with large icon navigation. Most of the features of the normal site are now available.

Lookup 8 - The Latest Posted Tue, 13 Oct 2009 03:27:00 +1000 by Chris

Lookup 8 is moving along smoothly with a new trim interface, plenty of new features and better performance. Currently the old database engine is being torn out and replaced with an updated version to handle 97-2002 Access databases (*.mdb) and 2007 and 2010 databases (*.accdb).

The SQL engine has been enhanced and tuned with lots more advanced search operators and available sql functions. I have currently upgrade all the database loaders and improved performance dramatically, including on the values list. The upgraded areas are all compatible and tested on the newer and older databases.

The focus is SQL; better performance, better queries and query building tools.

It feels and looks like I have removed something but the improved performance and better design are making it easier. Code has been totally overhauled with over half of the application rewritten.

The new configuration file and licencing is in place. Licencing is simpler and cheaper this time and easy to use. The configuration file is more dynamic. At this stage it allows me to categorise items better and improve performance and reduce file management but in the long term it gives me a way to reduce variable handling between windows and add and improve settings and options. It also means there will be no more upgrades which will affect settings. The new ini file provides the ability to update the application and keep your settings moving forward but nothing will be carried over from v7 to v8 apart from your database.

Current Dev Build 8.0.0.29. Coming Soon.

Lookup 8 Developments Posted Sun, 11 Oct 2009 18:25:00 +1000 by Chris

Due to some issues I have not been able to resolve my LookupPOS side project has been delayed but it is still under way.

I have taken the opportunity to begin work on Lookup 8. This is a return to the real roots of Lookup focusing on database querying without the opening hours and unnecessary extras but with a smaller footprint, improved performance and a cleaner more stable interface.

I believe I will cut about 25% of the code from the application in this upgrade and improve the look, feel, power and flexibility of Lookup. I am also planning major changes to the configuration files to bring them into line with my other applications. More search functions in a better selection field make analysis easier.

Here is a sneak preview:

Don't hold your breathe just yet. I am not expecting to release it this month. I need to test it from scratch as i am replacing everything. New 1 size fits all licence at a better price and new licence system. Existing licence holders will be able to send in their licence for a replacement.

Lookup is my Access database query tool. Find out more.

Microsoft Bing Search Added! Posted Tue, 29 Sep 2009 04:58:00 +1000 by Chris

I have now added Microsoft Bing Click to insert iconClick to insert iconClick to insert icon1/2 search to my site and performed some behind the scenes updates to improve my listings over the coming months.

Bing is great for images, better than google, but I am still not convinced the search is better. One way to find out.

I have also updated the news item page and added bing search. The home page has seen a number of substantial updates and I have updated numerous other pages throughout the site including the mobile site.

My search is split into two main searches. One is the site pages (via Bing or Google) and the other is the database. The database contains all the news, myline, media, faq items that are entered. Software is in the site pages not in the database.

Click to insert icon I hope you like the revamped home page. I have noticed that my recent efforts have not gone unrewarded with a massive surge of activity in the last few weeks due to software and news updates encouraging increased site traffic.Click to insert icon
